_________
A) SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS…
VirusDetective® 5.x and VirusBlockade™ II 2.x require a Macintosh Plus (or later) running System 6.0.2 (or later).
_________
B) INSTALLATION 1: INITIAL INSTRUCTIONS USING ANY SYSTEM…
VirusBlockade II and VirusBlockade II DEMO are Control Panel documents for the Macintosh.
1) Install the fonts that VirusBlockade II and VirusDetective will use. If the following fonts are not installed already, install them now or things won’t look as they should on the screen:
Helvetica 9, 10, 12,18;
Chicago 12;
Geneva 9, 12, 18.
2) If you have not done so already, install the VirusDetective 5.x desk accessory (DA) PRIOR to installing VirusBlockade II by following the VirusDetective Installation instructions for either the 6.x or 7.x System.
_________
C) INSTALLATION 2A: INSTRUCTIONS SPECIFIC TO SYSTEM 6.x…
To install VirusBlockade II using System 6.0.2 (or later):
1) Install the Apple’s Control Panel desk accessory (DA) if it is not already installed. You will find complete instructions in the Apple manual that accompanied your Macintosh on how to install desk accessories.
2) Copy the VirusBlockade II file into the System Folder.
3) Restart your Macintosh – this will load VirusBlockade II.
If you want to install the DEMO version of VirusBlockade II rather than the fully-functional version, copy VirusBlockade II DEMO into the System folder. NOTE: DON’T have both the fully-operational and the DEMO version in the System Folder at the same time!
To open the VirusBlockade II, you would do so through the desk accessory called the ‘Control Panel’. Under the Apple menu, find the Control Panel; click it to open it. Once the Control Panel folder is open, scroll down the alphabetical listing on the left side until you get to the VirusBlockade II icon. Highlight the VirusBlockade II icon. Once the VirusBlockade II icon is highlighted, it is open. Once it is open, you can change any of the options (“preferences”). If you are using the DEMO version, your changes will not be retained when you shut down your Macintosh.
It is important to know that your changes will ONLY take effect AFTER you either click another Control Panel document or close the Control Panel desk accessory.
_________
D) INSTALLATION 2B: INSTRUCTIONS SPECIFIC TO SYSTEM 7.x…
To install VirusBlockade II using System 7.x:
1) Drag the VirusBlockade II icon into the CLOSED System Folder. The VirusBlockade II icon will automatically deposit itself into Control Panel folder within the System Folder.
2) Restart your Macintosh – this will load VirusBlockade II.
If you want to install the DEMO version of VirusBlockade II rather than the fully-functional version, copy VirusBlockade II DEMO into the Control Panel’s folder. NOTE: You should NOT have both the fully-operational version and the DEMO version in the Apple Menu Items folder (in the System Folder) at the same time!
To open VirusBlockade II, open the Control Panel folder and double-click on the VirusBlockade II document. Once the VirusBlockade II icon is open, you can change any of the options (“preferences”). If you are using the DEMO version, your changes will NOT be retained when you shut down your Macintosh.
It is important to know that your changes will ONLY take effect AFTER you close the VirusBlockade II window.
_________
E) IF BOTH “VIRUSBLOCKADE II” AND “VIRUSBLOCKADE II DEMO” ARE IN THE SYSTEM FOLDER, ONLY ONE WILL LOAD…
Both VirusBlockade II (the fully-operational version) and VirusBlockade II DEMO Control Panel documents should NOT BOTH be in the System folder simultaneously. If sometime in the past, you installed the DEMO version installed, and are about to install the full-working version, first put the DEMO version into some other folder (or the Trash)! Only AFTER the DEMO version is in some other folder should you then install the full-working version.
[Vice versa is true too: If you installed the fully-operational version and are about to install the DEMO version, first put the fully-operational version into some other folder! Only AFTER the fully-operational version is in some other folder should you then install the DEMO version.]
If VirusBlockade II and VirusBlockade II DEMO are both in the System folder at the same time, only ONE will load. The one that will load will be the one whose name comes first alphabetically. The version whose name comes second alphabetically will NOT load. Assuming that neither name has been changed, “VirusBlockade™ II” will be the ONE to load, and “VirusBlockade™ II DEMO” won’t load (because alphabetically “VirusBlockade™ II” comes BEFORE “VirusBlockade™ II DEMO”).
During startup, the icon (that appears along the bottom of the screen) of the one that loads shows up as the “normal” VirusBlockade II icon. The one that doesn’t load shows up as VirusBlockade II’s “bypass” icon (which is the normal icon but which has a circle/slash through it).
_________
F) GIVE OUT THE “VIRUSBLOCKADE II DEMO” TO YOUR FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES, NOT THE FULLY-FUNCTIONAL VERSION…
The fully-functional version of VirusBlockade II is not be given out to anyone. We have furnished you with the DEMO version of VirusBlockade II so you will have handy a version you can give out to anyone; it is publicly distributable. Make sure you REALLY are giving out the DEMO version, and not the fully-operational version by mistake.
The DEMO version lets you sample MOST of VirusBlockade II’s features and describes ALL of them. We have furnished the DEMO version so people can evaluate and investigate whether VirusBlockade II fits a majority of their anti-viral requirements. If, after you have investigated it, you find it does fit your needs, purchase the fully-operational version directly from Shulman Software Co. Know that all our software comes with a 30-day money back guarantee, no questions asked.
The fully-operational version of VirusBlockade II has three features that are disabled (or removed) in the DEMO version, as follows:
1) Any changes to the options (that is, “preferences”) are NOT saved permanently. Any changes you make revert back to the original configuration whenever you restart your Macintosh.
2) You cannot set a password. This means you cannot enable the ROOKIE SWITCH™.
3) FOR PROGRAMMERS AND DEVELOPERS ONLY: There are no programmer’s hooks. Other applications cannot install a matched file callback procedure nor can they ask VirusBlockade II to directly scan a file.
_________
G) THE DOCUMENTATION IS NOW IN THE FORM OF SEVERAL ‘HELP’ FILES INTERNAL TO THE PROGRAM (AS OPPOSED AN TO EXTERNAL TEXT FILE)…
In order to keep the documentation from getting separated from the VirusBlockade II Control Panel, we have changed the format of the documentation from EXTERNAL to INTERNAL. It used to be that the documentation was an external text document; now documentation is contained within several internal ‘Help’ files – this way the documentation is much more handy. VirusBlockade II’s Main Window has access to the internal ‘About’ file, the ‘Configs’ file (Configuration Scenarios) (hold the Option key down; press the ‘About’ button), and the Main Window ‘Help’ file. The Scan Disks, Scan Files, Lock Disks, and Options dialog boxes have access to their own ‘Help’ file.
_________
H) CREATE YOUR OWN INSTRUCTION MANUAL ON PAPER…
To create a file to print an instruction manual on PAPER, first note that each of the seven dialog boxes (‘About’ file, ‘Configs’ file (Configuration Scenarios) (hold the Option key down; press the ‘About’ button) and five ‘Help’ files) has a “Help -> Clipboard” (or “Text -> Clipboard”) button. When you click the “Help -> Clipboard” button, the entire text of that particular file gets copied onto the Clipboard; paste the contents of the Clipboard into your chosen word processing (or desktop publishing) application. We suggest you add the contents of each file to the end of the previous file. If you want to print on a laser printer, change the entire document to one or more laser fonts. If you want to print on a dot matrix printer, make sure document is in one or more bit-map fonts. Before printing, set all of your print settings the way you want them. Then print on paper.
If the word processing program you choose ‘understands’ the “standard formatted text Clipboard” (MacWrite II does; Microsoft Word unfortunately doesn’t), all the text formatting (font, font size, bold, italics, underline, etc.) that exists in the internal ‘Help’ files will be RETAINED. Otherwise, like with Microsoft Word, you will unfortunately lose all the text formatting, and be left with ONLY text.
_________
I) “VIRUSBLOCKADE SCRAPBOOK” CONTAINS GRAPHICS OF THE MAIN WINDOW AND SEVERAL DIALOG BOXES…
In case you want to compile your own instruction manual on paper, including GRAPHICS of the Main Window and several dialog boxes, for your convenience, we have furnished a scrapbook file called “VirusBlockade™ Scrapbook” which contains several screen shots in PICT format. If you are using a color monitor, some of the screen shots will show up with color accents. We have purposely designed VirusBlockade II to be mostly black, white and gray, keeping color to a minimum.
If you use Apple’s Scrapbook to view “VirusBlockade™ II Scrapbook”, first rename the file to “Scrapbook File” and put it in your System folder.
_________
J) THE “VBII PREFS” FILE IS WHERE YOUR CHANGES (“PREFERENCES”, “OPTIONS”) ARE STORED…
Using System 6.x (starting at 6.0.2):
Your changes will take effect ONLY after you do either one of two things:
1) click another Control Panel document,
2) close the Control Panel desk accessory.
Your changes are stored in the “VBII Prefs” file located in the System Folder. Copy the “VBII Prefs” file and move it from Macintosh to Macintosh, if you wish.
Using System 7.x:
Your changes will take effect ONLY when you close the VirusBlockade II window. Your changes are stored in the “VBII Prefs” file located in the “Preferences” Folder in the System Folder. Copy the “VBII Prefs” file and move it from Macintosh to Macintosh, if you wish.
_________
K) CONFIGURATION SCENARIOS (OR HOW YOU MIGHT WANT TO SET UP YOUR OPTIONS UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES)…
Hold down the Option key and click the ‘About’ button (which then turns into the ‘Configs’ button) to read details regarding the configuration scenarios. Here are two samples among the several “typical” scenarios:
“I am the only one using my Macintosh. I don’t use a modem. My Macintosh is not connected to a network, and only obtain new files by way of floppy disks.”
“I am the only one who uses my Macintosh. My Macintosh is not connected to a network. I obtain new files by way of floppy disks, and by copying them brom electronic bulletin boards (or networks) via modem (‘downloading’).”
